This is the response by the Honourable Attorney-General of the Republic of Ghana to the joint statement issued by the Bar Council of England and Wales (@thebarcouncil) and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (@cla_lawyers) on August 14, 2025, regarding the suspension of the Her Ladyship, Justice Gertrude A.E.S. Torkornoo, C.J., from the office of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

Is our democracy under siege? I write from the position of a Ghanaian, who truly believes in the tenets of democracy, rule of law and respect for people's privacy. I have just read and seen on social media that Armed Soldiers and Police have raided the private home of the Former Finance Minister under the Presidency of @NAkufoAddo and @MBawumia . I have made my calls and my checks confirm that it is true. As a former appointee of the Government of President Akufo-Addo, I know that we come to serve and only to serve in the interest of the Ghanaian people. Must we be scared and worried that after serving diligently the people of Ghana, one is not safe even in their home and country of birth? Who sanctions these raids? Are we to be more worried at the turn of events? I hope and pray that the media, civil society organizations, the diplomatic community and ECOWAS are watching Ghana. I have many things to write, but let me leave this here and return tomorrow morning. Good night.
