The moral of the story isn't that you have to run to "the center" per se, it's that whatever you do it has to work, whether by policy appeal, shrewd messaging. or sheer force of charisma. If you're running as the winning winner who wins at a certain point that has to ring true.

Probably a necessary evil for DeSantis in the primary. Hard to run on electability when two-thirds of your voters (probably more in a primary) think Trump won in 2020.

Expect more of this as DeSantis negatives climb. Which they will because fighting with Trump will escalate and "destroy woke ideology" sounds weird as hell to general election voters.
