The global far right surge began years before COVID, and as this notes it took a pause during. And COVID was a major cause of Trump’s loss. So if anything it slowed the surge. Post-COVID inflation and the end of pandemic social programs had an impact, which is why it came after.

I think there’s a bit too much of a focus on Covid as a cause of the global far right surge and not enough on the Russia-Ukraine war. Establishment parties were still doing well far into 2021, well far the start of COVID and during the heart of the vax debates.
