In order to understand Trumps post, you have to understand all stakeholders involved. Venezuela is one of China’s cheapest and most reliable heavy-oil suppliers. Beijing keeps buying the oil, extends loans when the state can’t pay, and sends quiet technical teams to keep the fields pumping. China does *not* want a war or regime collapse because that would interrupt the oil and give the debt a haircut. The dominant strategy is steady, low-profile, transactional friend who will keep the lights on but would never send troops to save this friend. Russia sells Venezuela weapons, spare parts, and air-defense missiles, and uses them as a loud anti-American voice in Latin America. But Russia has been completely tied up in Ukraine, so the help is now mostly symbolic + small deliveries by cargo plane. The relationship is; old ally on paper, but too stretched to do anything big if the US actually swings. The US sees Maduro as a drug-trafficking regime right on America’s doorstep, and a cheap way for China, Russia and Iran to park money and troops 1,500 miles from Florida. At least that’s the narrative. These constant loud threats are just theater to force Maduro to make concessions (elections, drug routes, oil contracts) without having to launch a real war that would be expensive and messy. It’s a zero-sum game where every concession made, benefits the TPS while equally damaging China/Russia. These threats are cheap and they work. They scare investors and airlines away from Venezuela, economy gets worse, and pressure on Maduro rises. That pressure spills over on to the arrangements the country has with China and Russia. And creates leverage out of thin air. Maduro might eventually offer a face-saving deal (new elections, oil licenses to US companies, etc etc) just to make the threats go away for personal survival. Meanwhile Russia and China will keep buying oil and selling just enough to stop a total collapse. But if the US ever launches real strikes or a naval blockade, neither China nor Russia will fight. They’ll protest at the UN, keep the oil flowing through back channels, and let Maduro twist. Effectively China/Russia are shorting Venezuela. Abandonment of Maduro will come from a militarily and politically standpoint the moment it gets dangerous. And the US knows that.
