Friday was my last day at Rest of World. I'm grateful to @mvzelenks for bringing me onto his ace team and for the cool stuff I worked on (links below). Hiring managers: Reporters tell me I'm a pretty great editor, and I'd like to keep editing investigations or other enterprise.

My last piece from Minnesota, for now, on the underground army of locals who mobilized to make sure their neighbors were fed. Hope you’ll read,

This is trend is consistent w/ recent @Reuters reporting that ICE has been referring several people a day in Minnesota to federal prosecutors for charges of interfering w/ law enforcement, storing data on their activities in government databases. reuters.com/world/us/ice-i…

Here in Minneapolis, Trump border czar Tom Homan has announced the end of Operation Metro Surge, the largest immigration enforcement operation in history — with some important caveats. Thread to follow.

On Friday, three observers were taken into custody in three separate incidents in south Minneapolis in a span of less than 30 minutes. The arrests come as Homan has declared that full federal withdrawal is contingent on an end to “the resistance.” theintercept.com/2026/02/09/ice…

While much of the chatter around border czar Tom Homan’s takeover of ICE operations in Minnesota has focused on a relatively small reduction in numbers, another trend has emerged in recent days: intense focus on observers documenting the agency’s operations.

I have been laid off today from the @washingtonpost, along with most of the International staff and so many other wonderful colleagues. I’m heartbroken for our newsroom and especially for the peerless journalists who served the Post internationally — editors and correspondents who have been my friends and collaborators for almost 12 years. It’s been an honor to work with them. I launched the WorldView column in January 2017 to help readers better understand the world and America’s place in it and I’m grateful for the half a million loyal subscribers who tuned into the column several times a week over the years.

A retiree wrote this email to a DHS attorney. Within five hours, DHS demanded Google turn over records for his account. A Kafkaesque form of domestic surveillance, intimidating Americans for lawful speech. New from us at the Post: washingtonpost.com/investigations… @JohnWoodrowCox

"It's believed to be the first time a local police department in Minnesota intervened in a federal law enforcement action since the surge in immigration enforcement began two months ago."
David J. Bier@David_J_Bier

DHS agents in MN swerved in front of an unarmed woman who was recording them, once again WALK IN FRONT OF A CAR with guns drawn. The only thing they've learned from Renee Good is how to get away with killing people. A local cop intervened to stop the illegal arrest!
