Ida B. Wells was born a slave in July 1862 and was freed as an infant under the Emancipation Proclamation. Her parents died when she was 16. She got a job teaching to keep her siblings together. She subsequently became an investigative journalist, educator, and an early leader in the civil rights movement. She was one of America’s earliest investigative reporters. Wells was also one of the founders of the NAACP. She dedicated her life to combating racism and violence and advocated for equality. Wells exposed the brutality of lynching. She argued that whites used lynching to terrorize African Americans in the South because they represented economic and political competition which was a threat of loss of power for whites. Ida B. Wells sued a Railway in 1883 after being dragged for refusing to go to a segregated car. She was granted a posthumous Pulitzer Prize. #DemsUnited #WomensHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryWithLana
