Ghana sports: Let’s go beyond words ‘Letter to Kofi Adams’, @G_SportsGH Editor, @MauriceQuansah writes to Sports and Recreation Minister-designate on Friday. ‘Ghana sports is dead’— @FelixKwakyeOfo1 on Saturday via @Ghanasoccernet. ‘Ghana league is dead’ — Sulley Muntari on Sunday via @3SportsGh. If you’ve read the contents accompanying the quoted headlines you’ll not be mistaken to term them as doomsday messages. I believe in the hope of Christ’s resurrection so death isn’t the end. That’s to say if Ghana football or sports is dead, it would resurrect depending on what we do with the resources we have as a country. Sports and Recreation Minister-designate, Kofi Adams himself alluded to the doomsday talk about our football and sports in general on @HappySportsGh last week. I doubt if the @ghanafaofficial President, @kurtokraku agrees with Sulley Muntari and many others who hold the damning view that our league is dead. Operatives of GFA strongly oppose such descriptions and the decent or sane ones like @alooameenu would invite you to come and help rather than commentating on the rot. So, amidst the seeming gloominess, there’s hope, because we all know the problem except that those with power to change things lack the will to confront the problem head-on. Like @GhanaBlackstars — the state must end its amorous affairs with GFA to take hold of matters to instill seriousness, confidence, and credibility in the choice of coach for the team. Fans keep losing faith in the GFA, Kurt, and Otto Addo to do anything new. Minister Kofi Adams must use the authority his office would wield to breathe life into the handling of the senior national team. The government doesn’t have control over league football. The GFA does — particularly over their usually compromising clubs — the more reason the league continues to lose its shine. The league however doesn’t exist in isolation of state sports apparatus. Let’s go beyond words and descriptions. Government must demand the best from its appointee at the Sports and Recreation Ministry and inject accountability, responsibility, and competitiveness into Ghana sports by way of work and good examples. The government has the authority to change the face of football and sports in Ghana if it so will or wishes.
