@peterrhague True, but he brought it to the masses. He's the Steve Jobs of lifting both feet off the floor at once whilst moving forward.

@peterrhague The second-best Christmas song is both 90s and American (the first is, of course, from Wolverhampton).

@peterrhague Do you think they get a cup of tea and a biscuit before they go?

@peterrhague Interesting; I'd not seen those before. A refurbished (2020ish) iPad would be in the same range, and a more general device, but if he's mainly wanting to work with existing applications on his computer a dedicated tablet might be a better fit.

@robhague There are some on Amazon for £200 or so and I was wondering if they were usable or not

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good graphics tablet? One with a proper screen, not just an input device.

@peterrhague Aren't drawing tablets with screens more expensive (being niche thing mainly of interest to professionals)? In any case, might be worth looking at refurb iPads — doesn't need to this year's model.

@robhague I’ll let him know his uncle wants to triple the value of his Christmas present!

@peterrhague I saw a headline earlier asking "Can Starmer recover from his early unpopularity in the same way Thatcher did?" I didn't realise they meant it that literally.

The only ship torpedoed during that war was AFAIK the Belgrano. I imagine that serving in the Argentine Navy caused something of a rift with his working class, salt-of-the-Earth toolmaker brother.

🚨 NEW: Keir Starmer says the Falklands Islands is "personal" to him "My uncle nearly lost his life when his ship was torpedoed defending the Falklands. They are British and they will remain British. And sovereignty in Gibraltar is equally not to be negotiated." #PMQs

@peterrhague It's still better than the 3S in some respects (which sounds like it sits between the 2 and the 3), and Amazon has some discounts on the lower-storage options.

Is it completely foolish to buy a Quest 3 at this point?

@CRGreathouse @peterrhague I'm not an expert, but a quick search suggests that, when done domestically rather than professionally, it was generally done by women rather than men.

@robhague @peterrhague Disagree. My understanding is that, prior to the washing machine, people generally washed their own clothes; it only became "woman's work" after the washing machine. So if washing machines were eliminated but women did all the laundry, that would be worse than before!

As apparently “abolish washing machines” is now inside the Overton window, it’s worth pointing out the number of “energy slaves” we have. A washing machine is about 20 men worth of physical labour. Oxen and horses can’t really help with the laundry, so all of it would have to be replaced by human muscle power. Do not romanticise this kind of toil.

@peterrhague Wouldn't a big problem be getting a signal back over that distance, both in terms of power and direction?

To be clear I’m not talking about a human mission - more of an unmanned flyby that can get us a close up look at the planets there

The Voyager spacecraft have proven it’s possible to operate long duration spacecraft for 47 years so far. To reach Proxima Centauri in that time you would “only” have to travel at 9% the speed of light. This is, in principle, achievable with existing technology.

@peterrhague @code More seriously, I think there are extensions that effectively or literally run NeoVim as the editor for VSCode, so it might be possible to have the best of both worlds.

🚀Polaris Dawn is now orbiting Earth higher than humans have been since the Gemini missions with the first ever private spacewalk happening tomorrow! This mission mirrors classic Gemini flights which inspired me to put together a thread of unedited film photo gems from Gemini missions 3-12!🧵 We will be seeing similar views to these during Polaris Dawn! 👇
