From the polished, but passé tradition of the “Motown look” featuring bespoke suits and tie-get-ups, to a new reflection of the times.
The 70s saw a period of change in fashion, politics, and social climate.
In a post-Black Panther world where radical Blackness was continuing to rise, as was Stevie’s fame and fashion.
His closet saw a shift toward bolder patterns, African-inspired textures, flamboyant mink, feathered and fur coats, ringer tees with text, and self-expression through big hats, braided cornrow styles with intricate beads, clean silhouettes, and other statement pieces that served as his declaration of activism.
Much of which Stevie styled or chose himself with the help of in-house record label image makers, his mother, and Motown’s stylists.
