A baby pygmy hippo went viral in 2024. Ethereum's founder donated $292,000 to her zoo. Scientists confirmed in early 2025 it moved the wild population of 2,500 by exactly zero. Berlin Zoo named their new one 'Bread Roll.' Born May 9 to mother Debbi and father Tobi, the new calf is named Brötchen, German for bread roll, and already weighs 20 kilograms. Her sister Toni, also Debbi's, recently moved to a zoo in France. Each calf gets logged in a global registry and eventually ships to a new institution, keeping the bloodlines from getting too narrow. All the pygmy hippos in zoos worldwide add up to under 450. That is the species' only safety net outside West Africa. Pygmy hippos live in four countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. Nowhere else. Three-quarters of their original forest is gone, cleared for logging, farming, and mining for coltan, the mineral inside your phone's circuit board. They are nocturnal and nearly impossible to spot, so nobody had even attempted a full population count in Liberia until 2025. Current estimates put the number somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000, with no reliable way to know which end is closer. One group that lived in Nigeria went extinct during the 20th century. That branch is gone. Breeding more in captivity is harder than it looks. There are far more females than males across the global zoo network, which caps how fast breeders can work. When a male arrived at a zoo in Athens in February 2024, the first there in ten years, keepers said it was a big deal. That kind of birth gets shared widely because the supply is that short. Moo Deng was born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand in July 2024. She went viral, tripled the zoo's visitor numbers, and inspired Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, a major global crypto network, to donate 10 million Thai baht (around $292,000) to the zoo. Mongabay, a wildlife reporting site, published an analysis in February 2025 and found zero measurable gains for wild populations. Unlike elephants or gorillas, pygmy hippos have no dedicated funding. They run on general conservation budgets while the forests they need keep shrinking. Debbi is why Brötchen matters beyond the name. She has given birth at Berlin Zoo in 2004, 2007, 2008, 2024, and now 2026, five calves across two decades. Each one eventually moves to another institution, adding to a global population that cannot afford to lose genetic variety. The wild count is probably falling. Nobody has the tools yet to know how fast. Every bread roll that gets a name is also a form of insurance.
