Early stroll. A ceiling of moon, stars, clouds. The breeze exercises up and down the street. A motorbike drags broken silence behind it. A traffic cone trio on the back of a truck. A gleaming set of metal steps in an otherwise empty room.

Early stroll. Rain seems to be the whole story. A popup torrent gambols down the street. The son et lumiere of a double decker bus. The curtains are shut tight in that empty house. A gloomy alley yearns for my footsteps.

@IMcMillan The poetry class I teach here in the US for the Delaware Cancer Support Community likes how your Early Strolls have continuity, yet they're still always full of interesting surprises. They all have different favourite mentions--Lowell's wondering how the bus shelter's doing.

Early stroll. The circular narratives of a parked car’s wheels. The sombre cemetery gates. A passing minibus looks like a lit greenhouse. That France-shaped puddle. A texting lad on a corner.

Early stroll. Each star’s long song. I peel an orange as I walk. Brake lights recede, fade. Cold moss on a low wall. That discarded blue ribbon turns the pavement into a gift.

@trevjrho @IMcMillan Yes, though they're a bit too sweet for me unless there's some plain whipped cream to mitigate the sugariness! I do love a homemade rhubarb crumble.

@IMcMillan Fred always beating you in the "paper carrying in race", perhaps you're going to have to change your tactics, Ian ! As it's clearly crumble morning , I love M&S mini rhubarb crumbles as an occasional treat.

Fred carries the papers into the shop as I arrive. I can never get there before him. He tells me he likes the apple and rhubarb crumbles from Lidl. I tell him I made an apple crumble last Sunday. He says he’ll see me tomorrow.

He’s there at 0545 which is a bit too early for me as I start my stroll at 0520.

Early stroll. A leaf falls from a tree and lands in front of me. Frosted parked cars look almost edible. A flickering TV behind a thin curtain. That branch was relaxing on that wall the other day. Stars are knocking on morning’s door.

Early stroll. The bald moon. The possibility of movement in the wheels of that parked car. I’m wearing my hi-vis jacket for the first time since February. The cold air pushes a tear from my right eye. A duet between a cockerel and music from a passing van.

Early stroll. The cemetery fence keeps the mourning in. I lose count of all the fallen leaves; I’ll try again tomorrow. Time’s soap has washed the sky’s face. A light in a room, reflected in a mirror. A three-word poem on a sign: NO ROAD MARKINGS.

Early stroll. The moon wears a cloud cravat. The breeze ruffles Monday’s hair. A red glove at the base of a streetlight. I walk through a puddle just for the joy of it. Dark distant woods like a smudge on blotting paper.

Early stroll. Half dark/half light. A bird pauses at different trees like a stopping train. A black car against a white garage door. A small horse walks by a small tree. An L-plate thrown, perhaps triumphantly, into a garden.

Early stroll. A guard of honour of fallen leaves. Layers of light on the horizon. A cloud in the shape of an abstract thought. A lost bracelet on a low wall. Sunlight mines brief gold from a cornfield.

Early stroll. The moon has climbed the sky’s ladder. A hanging basket like a firework’s ghost. That empty house glows with morning. A queue of cloud at the door of the horizon. A fox and I exchange startled glances.

Early stroll. Sky as artist’s palette. A hanging branch tries to ruffle my hair. Three planks at angles in a garden. Two holes in an old wall like staring eyes. Seven geese creak by overhead.

Musk claims Social Security is a "gigantic magnet to attract illegal immigrants." In fact, immigrants here illegally do not collect Social Security. But they pay $25.7 billion a year into it, a recent study found, so these undocumented workers are actually subsidizing Americans.
