Today, I appointed Chrystia Freeland @cafreeland as an Advisor on Economic Development. Chrystia is highly skilled in these matters and has extensive experience in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations. Right now, Ukraine needs to strengthen its internal resilience – both for the sake of Ukraine’s recovery if diplomacy delivers results as swiftly as possible, and to reinforce our defense if, because of delays by our partners, it takes longer to bring this war to an end. I am grateful to everyone who is ready to support our state and our engagement with partners. Glory to Ukraine!

Everywhere I go I hear the same thing - the world wants more Canada. I visited 14 countries and spoke with over 100 foreign Ministers with a clear objective: to deliver real results here at home. We strengthened diplomatic ties, opened new avenues for cooperation, and secured generational investments.

Kirsten Hillman is a real patriot who has served Canadians proudly and effectively in the face of unprecedented challenges against our economy and our sovereignty.     My first meeting with Kirsten was on my first official trip as Prime Minister, mere weeks after being elected, as she briefed me in the Philippines on the complexities and opportunities of our trade with Asia. Her skill, toughness, and commitment to her country shone through from the very beginning. After navigating through Canada’s negotiation of the CPTPP, helping renegotiate NAFTA, and getting steel and aluminum tariffs lifted by Washington, Kirsten earned her place as Ambassador to the United States.   As Ambassador, Kirsten worked tirelessly to build up our economy and resolve multiple trade disputes. She promoted North American security, helped fight against climate change, navigated COVID-19, and quietly and effectively contributed to the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.    Kirsten, my dear friend, thank you for your outstanding service. All the best to you, Duncan, and your two sons in the next chapter.

Ambassador Hillman’s intelligence, determined action and diplomacy have contributed immensely to the advancement of a new economic and security relationship with the United States — and prepared the foundations for Canada in the upcoming review of CUSMA. As one of the longest-serving Ambassadors to the United States in our history, her wide-ranging and constructive engagement with all branches of the U.S. Government as well as with leaders across America and Canada have yielded crucial results for Canadians. Through a period of transformation in the relationship, Ambassador Hillman has resolutely defended Canadian values and interests, while promoting a stronger future for workers who depend on stable trade, families who count on a safe and secure border, and businesses navigating new global uncertainty. As she prepares to step down from her role in the new year, I am grateful to Ambassador Hillman for her invaluable counsel and thank her for her long record of dedicated service to all Canadians.

This war must end — and Canada will continue our efforts among allies to bring about freedom, peace, and security for Ukraine.
