The first review of KINGDOM QUARTERBACK—our book about Patrick Mahomes and the history of Kansas City—is here from Kirkus. They called it "lively and meaningful." "Chiefs fans will find this a revelation, and urban planners might learn a thing or two, too." It’s out Aug. 22. Review: kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/m…

60 years ago today Texas Western won the national title in a groundbreaking game. Don Haskins’ Miners were the first team to start five African American players, busting the color barrier among southern schools.

I’ve thought Darryn Peterson needed to share his story. People would understand if they knew what really happened. On Friday, I got him to share about the day he ended up in the hospital and how that’s hung over his time at KU. His story (free to read): nytimes.com/athletic/71274…

How cool is that, you copy someone else’s bracket. Does someone at home still cut the crust off your bread too? Maybe you get juice in a sippy cup? I don’t know what’s worse, copying someone’s bracket or bragging about it.

Mike Krzyzewski kept more than 5,000 practice plans over his career. The one he shared from the 2008 Redeem Team shows how preparation, habits and leadership shaped one of basketball’s greatest coaches. nytimes.com/athletic/70759…

@KevinKaduk I think about this a lot. obviously, the news cycle is a lot different, too, but I also think it's contributed to fewer mainstream stars in any sport or league other than the NFL.

The fall of Sports Illustrated had a huge impact, IMO. Getting a great cover and in-depth story in your mailbox 4-7 days after the event definitely prolonged the moment and served as anchor for the memory going forward.

There’s an interesting case study to be had about nothing in sports feeling legendary anymore. I don’t think it’s a nostalgia thing at all, I think it’s the rise of social media and accessibility so we move on from everything immediately.

As my friend @SlangsOnSports shared, I found the Taiwanese band! They're from Taiwan, have regular day jobs, & came to Tokyo for the World Baseball Classic to cheer for Chinese Taipei. Their band is seated in the stands down the third base line. Don't forget the drum! Incredible.

Many Olympic champions report the same experience: A gold medal doesn't feel as good as they think it will. I wrote about decades of social psychology research, the "arrival fallacy," and why we’re all so bad about predicting what will make us happy: nytimes.com/athletic/70657…

A narrative has been pushed that Darryn Peterson doesn’t care about his team and only cares about his draft stock. I’m not buying. And last night he provided a peak into how he’s really wired. My column, free to read: nytimes.com/athletic/70667…

What advice does Mark Pope have for young, aspiring journalists? I’m teaching an upper‑level journalism course at #UK this semester, and on Thursday, I took my class to Pope’s press conference. I asked him what guidance he’d give the next generation of journalists. His answer was worth hearing.

Last night, I went to my first Kansas basketball game as a spectator. It was surreal because the last time I was inside Allen Fieldhouse, I was playing for Iowa State (and beating Kansas). I grew up a die-hard Jayhawks fan. Both my parents went to KU and I watched every game as a kid. I've spoken (and written) a bunch about how Roy Williams told me I'd never play in the Big XII, about how I went to Iowa State, and about how we beat Kansas the last four times I ever played them (and how good that felt). I'll probably never completely lose that chip on my shoulder, but I spent a lot of last night's game thinking about how grateful I am that things did NOT go the way I wanted when I was 18 years old. I like my story: Iowa State on an academic scholarship thanks to Tim Floyd (and my mom's research), the early struggles, the late triumphs, the heartbreak to end it all. It's so, so hard to remember this, but it's often true that we'll never find what's right until someone tells us we're wrong.

There have been 15 Top 10 games at Allen Fieldhouse where Kansas wasn’t the higher ranked team in the Bill Self Era. Bill Self’s record: 15-0.
