Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was no symbolic observer on D Day. As a brigadier general and assistant division commander of the 4th Infantry Division he insisted on landing in the first wave at Utah Beach on June 6, 1944 despite repeated objections from superiors who considered him too old and medically unfit. He had arthritis severe enough to require a cane and lingering heart issues but he argued that his place was with his men at the moment it mattered most. His father Theodore Roosevelt had preached the virtues of strenuous leadership and Roosevelt Jr. felt bound to live up to that legacy. When the landing craft touched down the assault quickly went off course placing U.S. forces nearly a mile south of their intended landing zone. Instead of confusion Roosevelt calmly assessed the situation under fire famously remarking that they would start the war from right there. He personally directed units off the beach reorganized scattered troops and helped turn what could have been chaos into an effective advance inland. His presence had a steadying effect on young soldiers many of whom recognized his name and rank and drew confidence from seeing a general share their danger. Roosevelt Jr. survived D Day but the strain took its toll. Just over a month later on July 12 1944 he died of a heart attack in Normandy. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on D Day and was buried at the Normandy American Cemetery beside his brother Quentin who had been killed in World War I. © The Historian's Den #drthehistories
