Rents hitting record highs isn’t a reason to protect landlords, it’s proof the system is broken.
If landlords sell and fewer people can buy, all that happens is more people are pushed into an even tighter rental market. That drives rents up because housing is being treated as a profit driven commodity, not a basic need.
That’s the core issue.
A system that relies on private landlords will always fail to deliver affordability because profit depends on scarcity.
The solution isn’t to make private renting more profitable.
It’s to stop relying on it.
We need mass investment in council and social housing so homes are built for need, not profit. That’s how you stabilise rents, increase supply, and give people real security.
Shelter is a right, not a business model.

Landlords are selling up due en masse due to restrictive and costly policy and would you look at that … despite house prices dropping, many people still don’t qualify to buy, so will need to rent. Many of us warned of this, but people’s hatred for landlords overrides logic and sense.
