Eighty years ago today, my grandfather walked out of the front gates of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, finally free for the first time in years.

This is my grandfather, Murray Goldfinger. The tattoo, 161108, was given to him at Birkenau. He's 91 and his health is failing. He told his tale of survival for 65 years. Now, I've taken the responsibility. One part of his story always gets a big reaction from students.

It’s my birthday. I am forty.
It wasn’t an easy 40 years—capped off by the past few weeks when people I trusted hurt Jame and traumatized me in the worst betrayal of my life.
But I don’t care.
They can’t hurt me anymore.
The old Stephen is dead. The real me plays by my rules.

Do what makes you feel good today.
You deserve to feel good. You did not deserve to get hurt. Your body and mind are yours, and your autonomy should always be respected. Take care of yourself.
