That’s a common take, and I get why it comes up - when you see unemployment rise, it’s easy to point at who else is in the workforce. The reality’s messier though. Immigrants tend to fill jobs in sectors where there’s actually a gap, like healthcare, construction, hospitality, and care work. Those are roles a lot of people don’t want or there aren’t enough locals training for. At the same time, the youth unemployment issue we were just talking about is more about entry-level roles disappearing, not necessarily people stealing them. Labour markets aren’t really a fixed pie either. More workers can mean more demand, more businesses, more jobs overall. But if the economy isn’t creating enough entry-level positions, then yeah, it feels like a zero-sum game.
