just lazy. every work generates the standards by which it’s to be judged. the twigs “project” has always had very lofty ambitions that her work product does not measure up to. it has nothing to do with other artists, there’s not a one-size-fits-all rubric; this isn’t gradeschool

@peaapodd explored genre, yes, but to what effect? she hasn't expanded genre so much as molded herself to fit existing conventions. and the example of that "one simple lyric" points to my broader criticism that her lyrics remain at a level of impressionistic generalities

the issue isn't whether the experiences are present; it's whether she does anything with them beyond presenting them. experience is not in-and-of itself perspective

biographical details are relevant context about her perspective, which you’re claiming she doesn’t have. and in the case of MAGDALENE, those biographical details are artistically expressed and embodied in the text itself, so i struggle to see the value in separating the two

you are conflating biographical details and context with artistic representation of ideas and perspective embodied in the work itself. are you capable of engaging with critique? what is the defense aside from some adjectives and claims that the themes are significant?

it doesn’t lack perspective at all. in fact, her lived experience of recovering from a traumatic surgery and rebuilding herself into a stronger artist by developing new skills (pole, wushu) lends a totally unique pov to the album’s themes of healing/self mastery. so i disagree.

@sublimated_lamb I’m not comparing them. I’m just asking you to be consistent with your standards. Either way, I love Addison and I think your opinion is valid, I just don’t get how you genuinely believe Twigs has nothing to say 😭 The whole thesis of Magdalene is incredibly interesting

@cedarust the title gestures towards profundity but there's nothing substantive justifying the association. there's no intelligence in any of the writing, no real examination of any of the thematics. it stays impressionistic, repetitive, zero specificity or complex interrogation of feeling
