I’ve always found the personality of Mr. Edun a bit lackluster, but not enough to warrant being shown the door in this administration. For one, he is more experienced, more internationally exposed and more globally connected than Mr. Oyedele. This is not a jab at the taxman. Mr. Oyedele is also a fine administrator. Apart from my reservations about the proposed VAT increase and the capital gains tax in his reform, I still think he managed the entire process quite judiciously despite the opposition and controversies surrounding the tax law. If it were someone else, the whole effort might have gone down the drain. But Mr. Oyedele does not have the same level of international influence as Edun, which the latter has built over the years as a public financial administrator. Also, while Oyedele’s expertise is more rooted in tax reforms and revenue mobilization, I am not convinced he has been tested as an all-round administrator in coordinating an economy. This includes trade facilitation, budget planning and allocations, managing MDAs, sensitising stakeholders toward economic growth, collaborating with the CBN to ensure seamless fiscal and monetary synergy, as well as projecting Nigeria’s image in the global economic space. These responsibilities may prove overwhelming for him. Given all that, I have begun to think that the reason Edun was replaced is tied to his public disagreement with the president over revenue collection and budget performance.
