Here is a special backstage moment with the entire team going through our finale at least an hour before our scheduled time for ‘line-check’… and just to be clear, non of us was ‘late’ as I have read in some of the comments here on social media.
I come here to express our shared appreciation for everyone that attended An Ongoing Rehearsal, everyone that understood the potency of the vision, and everyone that showed us love and respect. Of course, we had prepared a lot more for you, but as it was announced “ALL KIPPIES’ PERFORMANCES ARE RUNNING LATE” — unfortunately for us this resulted to our set being cut midway. As one friend commented: “the set sounded like a beautiful story that was unfolding but then interrupted and deprived an end.” This is not far from the truth, I had worked on this piece as a ‘suite’ which meant that to understand the intended message, this had to be experienced in its totality.
Months of work went behind this presentation and its design, and for that I would like to appreciate every member of Ake(s)tra, that was on stage and the ones you never got to see:
Guest Artist: @aya_ntanzi , @thando_zide , @benjaminjephta , @zoemodiga , @ndabo , @muneyi_ and @lindasikhakhane_ .
Band: @robinfassie_ , @jpsax13 , @sokuyeka , @zibumac , @dalisu_ndlazi , @sphelelomazibuko and @sikhakhane.thabo
Surprise Guests: maestro @herbietsoaeli , @omagugumakhathini and @paras_sibalukhulu_dlamini
Animation: @crozier.sean

I just saw that Mr George Galloway quoted my tweet, and it reminds me of when, as a political science undergrad at Nigeria’s premier university, I was researching the brutality of the apartheid regime in South Africa and came across his debate at the Oxford Union for the first time.
In the debate, Mr Galloway spoke of a time he joined in the fight against apartheid in South Africa and asserted that he would never debate a supporter of apartheid because it is one of the worst forms of racism and fascism there are.
It is a delight to see that he has remained steadfast in speaking out against apartheid, racism, and genocide, and that he has been consistent in upholding democracy, respect for international law, and the sovereignty of nations, especially those vulnerable to the whims of imperial predators.
Attached is a video clip of his debate at the Oxford Union.

Abdullah came all the way from Germany. home to play for his audience. I’ve no doubt he will decide when it’s time to call it quit and not play or travel. He recently performed at Lincoln Jazz Centre with the trio. He may be old, but know what he’s doing. youtu.be/t5-66gZa5vo?si…

@ThembaKaula @Maqhawe_Ngubane @iGhostAccount @thamintuli It’s not that the Zulu weren't big on seafood. They were forcefully separated from it, cut off from coastal resources and maritime traditions through colonial displacement and imposed coastal land boundaries. Image: uVongo Beach, 1922.

Must feel good to still play at this age. He’s given us everything. I hope life is kinder and sweeter in all aspects for him.

Few artists carry the legacy of South African jazz like Abdullah Ibrahim. A composer whose music has travelled the world. What an honour to have him join us tonight.
