Hello new friends! 👋 So glad you’re here—especially if you’ve found me because of the Symphony of Crowns and Gods fantasy books. 📚 Here’s what to know about me: By day: I’m a programmer who builds databases and apps for medical data. By night: I’m an indie author and readers love the complex dilemmas I put my characters in. ✨ When I’m not writing, you’ll find me: • Binge-reading fantasy novels and manga 📖 • Deep in a JRPG rabbit hole (any fellow RPG fans? 👀) • Juggling all the above with dad duties in sunny California ☀️ Let’s connect! Drop your favorite book trope below ↓ or tell me what drew you here. Ready for adventures? A 🔗 to the first in my series is in my bio.

@AuthorKyrieW Thank you!!! Nothing’s finalized yet and I am going to have to adopt a minimalist art style as I am fairly inexperienced with many concepts, but at least there’s no limit to how many times I can push the “undo” button. 😃

I was seriously considering selling my iPad Pro and replacing it with a MacBook Neo due to the various iPadOS limitations for software dev and book publishing, but alas, I have taken it upon myself to attempt drawing my own book covers for an upcoming book. Something about the Apple Pencil just makes it so much nicer to work in Affinity Designer than with a mouse + keyboard. That said, I suspect the rumors about the touchscreen MacBook Pro coming out this fall will change the playing field again, particularly if it is pencil compatible and with a 180 degree folding bezel to compliment the iPhone Ultra also expected to be released in that timeframe. My takeaway from this is to hold on to existing tech as long as possible and remember that different tools are for different jobs.

It sucks to have to deal with unexpected technical challenges like that. I suspect agents are going to need to be put in their own lane where they access resources through a totally different (queued and throttled) path than humans. What are essentially bots should not cause detriment to the human user experience.

I want to quit using Spotify I'm so sick of the Spotify algorithm repeating the same 4-5 songs over and over again. Are there any good open-source alternatives? 🤔

The physical novelty of a folding phone has little interest to me, but what might tempt me would be a massive leap in software quality akin to iOS + iPadOS + extra magic that makes the folding phone more compelling than the sum of a typical iPhone + iPad combination separately. Otherwise, I suspect there will be more compromises made to where the traditional iPhone form factor will still make for a greater purchase from both a technical and user-friendly point of view. iOS 26 bugs and missing AI features aside, the iPhone is fully matured, and having close to a rock solid hardware and stable hardware stack is why I've been an Apple loyalist for so many years.

@theauthorbrian Wait... seriously? If something has ever brought you true joy, don't worry. One of the Powers That Be has already figured out how to ruin it. 🤦

I guess us indie authors will have to revert to email chains in order to survive. Forward this message to 10 other people or suffer a 10 year curse on your book sales. I’m sorry it’s come to this. K thanks, bye! 💙

MacOS Tahoe 26.4.1 introduced some kind of bug in the memory paging system that is REALLY frakking up my user experience. I operate on the razor's edge of RAM, screwing it up so that paging in and out is dog slow is making my life A LIVING HELL. @Apple what is you doing?

An acquaintance has a bookish podcast and puts out a call looking for authors to participate. Several messages into the DM conversation, they start talking about author fees. It was never mentioned this would be a paid promo. How do you reply?

@6starwarsfilms It'll take a major shift at Disney to get me truly excited about anything released post The Force Awakens. The good news is that most of the EU content I haven’t read since childhood feels new again.

Disney's greatest modern achievement is making star wars fans like me completely apathetic I've read over 150 novels, played 20+ video games, thousands of comics, seen the movies probably 50 times each I dont know or care when the grogu movie comes out. I won't be watching it.

They certainly do! Sometimes it is a hard price to swallow but if the artist’s portfolio matches the aesthetic you want, it’s worth the price. In many ways, paying for an artist is a marketing cost rather than dumping money into a vanity project. Just need to be clear and transparent about what is/isn’t cool with the artist regarding commercialization rights.

From what I’ve seen across various writing communities, most authors would prefer to use real artists to do their book cover artwork. Those who prefer AI use for their cover art usually fall into two camps: financial reasons or control reasons (as in not able to draw what they want but are happy to prompt all day until they generate something acceptable to them). The thing is that once an author uses AI generated artwork on their cover, and assuming readers recognize it as AI art, this puts a target on their back. Readers can’t help but wonder: did the author use AI to write the book too? Even if an author didn’t use AI except on the cover, now all of their written text is under the microscope, or worst case, people will assume AI was used across the board. It therefore hurts the author brand, image (pun not intended), and ultimately, sales. Bookish culture is generally Anti-AI at this time, and so from a business POV, I believe using generated images is more likely to harm rather than help a book’s reputation and sales more so than it can help them. Morality standpoint is in the eye of the beholder of course, but keep in mind that some readers will care more or less than others. Know your audience, and do the best you can with what time, money, and resources you have.

@theauthorbrian I prefer to work graphical assets and do it manually. I understand the themes of my story and I have a preference for minimalist covers, aesthetically. Artists don't read your work and come out with generic stuff, for a pretty steep pricepoint. No thanks. Rather do it myself.

That’s the way! There are different price range tiers across the board. Spending thousands on a cover isn’t as common as some might think. Excellent covers can be made for hundreds and some for less depending on the artist’s offerings and experience. One can always hire a more seasoned artist later on in their author career too. Some of my own books have gone through multiple cover versions as I was able to afford more experienced artists.

@EmmaRSotomayor Indeed, in some cases I feel as though it can easily fall into the bearing false witness territory. Manufacturing feelings for the sake of provoking responses from other people, what the algorithms typically reward, can cause someone to stretch the truth about a series of events.
