@GCSE_Macbeth When I was teaching English KS3-5, some of my favourite 'eureka' moments of seeing students gain textual insight came from lessons, set in mixed ability groups, based on "Let's Think in English". 🙂 Read, yes, then discuss, talk, question, explore, talk. letsthinkinenglish.org/video/

@rpondiscio This study was only about secondary Maths. And even there, the writers of the report advise caution, have many caveats & talk about very significant limitations to learning across all the groupings they studied - notably an over-emphasis on mastery & its associated pedagogies.

It's fine to do spelling tests. It's absolutely necessary to teach students vocabulary, but this can be done in a minimal fashion, incidentally while engaging with a text. For the most part, if we get students reading a tonne, then they'll be fine in their literacy. Right? END

I could be quite wrong about this, but bear with me. Students struggle to read words they don't already know. So, vocabulary is massive obviously. But vocabulary instruction is a drop in the ocean compared with how many words students need to know. #edutwitter 1/

Talk is vital in the English classroom. Reading thrives on sharing ideas and opinions. Through discussion, we model how readers make meaning, tackle challenges, infer, decode vocabulary and think critically. The latest issue of Teaching English highlights why talk matters.

Secondary schools receive data, but they rarely receive information about the curriculum. They know what score a pupil achieved, but they don't know what they've read, written, discussed, or argued. And in the absence of that knowledge, the professional default is to begin again

@DrSarahOlive I loved Clive James’s autobiographies - May Week Was In June was brilliant. He had an expansive vision of literature and culture — and his writing sparkled.

Fan girling at Sydney Uni today. I grew up with Clive James on UK TV before my family moved to Australia. I read Unreliable Memoirs for the first time last year & it made me homesick, especially the bit on Aussie sweets. I owned both these editions for a while. 1/2

@amwilson_opera @tes @NoSchoolSexism Literature is about gaining in consciousness and putting words on our inner lives - it may also be about broadening our horizons. The two things are far from mutually incompatible.
