Cannot recommend this strongly enough. If you have the fortitude to stick with it, you'd be very satisfied. I recommend (contrary to most books I read) that you listen to this on Audible while having the book with you for marking. The reader is magnificent but that's only because he has magnificent source material to read. There are passages that most people would roll their eyes over because they require patience and a level of engagement largely unknown today. Two chapters in particular are really masterful works of literature. The sidebars into how our minds wander. The sidebars into poverty in the 1300s. The sidebars into our own sin. The sidebars into routine. The sidebars into how an abbey is a community. It's a foreign country uncomprehendible to nearly anyone today. Hard recommend.
