[1/2] And bad news this year too: despite the snow-rich winter, Swiss glaciers lost 2.4% of their total ice volume in the past year. 🧊 Glacier melt in August was even record-breaking. 🏔️ For more details, see the press release by @glamos_ch: scnat.ch/en/id/GPLBt.

Konkordia ice loss (Aletsch Glacier) 2022 | 2023 | 2024 Thickness loss at the thickest ice in the Alps! 🔥 Last two years were record breaking... 🌡️ What do you think of the protective effect of the thickest snowpack in 25 years? 😅 Data/pic @matthias_huss @glamos_ch

Wait for it... Storm Boris unleashed historic amounts of rain in Lower Austria, causing major flooding. St. Pölten received over 400 mm of rain in just 5 days, making this september the wettest month ever recorded at this location. Just unreal.

Today's visit at Gries #glacier was disillusioning. After record winter accumulation, we could not imagine seeing all this snow disappearing so soon! But we're there now, another year of mass loss is ahead. Not yet dramatic, but it might become if summer heat persists. @glamos_ch

First publication from the CAIRN project (Contribution of avalanches to the mass balance of glaciers)! We propose a new approach to map avalanches from Sentinel-1 images and use it to analyze the spatio-temporal variability of avalanches in glacierized regions of the Alps & HMA

Turns out my appendix didn't fancy going to @UArctic Assembly in Norway this morning, so currently enjoying fantastic care of the Royal in Liverpool instead! Fewer pastries and exciting seafood, but now successfully lighter to the tune of one perforated vestigial organ

The goal of the Pléiades Glacier Observatory is to share maps of glacier elevation changes over 5-yr periods. Soon available... To keep you waiting, below a gallery of such maps for 2016-2021, 2017-2022 or 2018-2023. Red=thinning clearly dominating ☹️ legos.omp.eu/pgo/2024/03/28…

Field excursion to Col du Lac Blanc experimental site after the snowhydro 2024 conference. Nice to see some actual snow and no PowerPoint. Thanks to the organizers for this great day!
