On November 14, 1960–63 years ago—6-year-old #RubyBridges integrated William Frantz Elementary School in #NewOrleans, #Louisiana. Many, including white moderates, believed that she was "out of order." Thank you to Ruby Bridges and her family for being "out of order."

The USOC suspended Smith and Carlos from the U.S. Olympic team. On October 18, the Committee ordered both men to vacate the Olympic village within 48 hrs. Despite their medals, the two athletes faced intense criticism in the media and received death threats upon returning home.

Smith said his black scarf represented black pride and their black socks without shoes signified black poverty in America.
