Nothing, necessarily, because I'm not putting 100% odds on anything. Maybe we got lucky. Or maybe we die eleven years from now. Or maybe we survive because of cautions that were taken partially at the request of doomers. I wouldn't say it's settled in any case until the ASI clearly could have wiped us all out if it wanted to. If we're very very careful, we may never be sure!

Okay, one final question for AI doomers: If it turns out that in, say a decade, AI continues to advance but no doom occurs, what will you have been wrong about?

@usablejam @misraetel the point is that when talking about ASI alignment, an important part of the puzzle is that there are multiple ASIs, all with potentially different perspectives, values, trade offs.

It's beyond debate in my view (I don't literally mean that, it's just one-sided) that ASI will be able to toast all of us after it has billions of robots and runs the majority of the economy. The real question is: why would it kill us, instead of study us. Us, whose society and ecosystem is the most complex thing in the known universe. The best possible training data. So far, every doomer idea about this smuggles "it's likely" in with "it's possible." You can go to the pound right now, get a dog, and toast it. Easy. Free. But you don't. And those who do are typically not the smartest. There must be a why. Before you answer... remember... the ASI will be smarter than you. Don't give it one-liner lizard motives, please.

@ancaplater @misraetel It depends on how capabilities and efficiency scale. There are cases for "edge" computing, such as low-latency speech-to-text. But for most things, getting the right answer is more important than latency, and it makes sense to use the powerful model that needs a data center.
