This afternoon we were proud to be part of the annual #CommonwealthDay service at Westminster Abbey. Our Torch for Peace was present at Portcullis House at the ceremonial raising of the Commonwealth flag hosted by the Speaker of the UK House of Commons, Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle. 📷Dean and Chapter of Westminster/Picture Partnership.

Our cemeteries and memorials connect people and places across continents, marking individual lives with equality and care. At places such as Tyne Cot, you can find servicemen of the Commonwealth lying side by side in equal commemoration, such as Australian Clarence Smith Jeffries VC lying a stone’s throw from Glasgow Native James Ferris. Or the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, where Field Marshal Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, is commemorated alongside members of the South African Native Labour Corps. We tell the story of the Commonwealth’s contribution to the World Wars, something we highlight on days such as #CommonwealthDay each year. But our work goes far beyond that; it is a year-round, eternal commitment.

World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. For soldiers, water is precious, a friend who quenches their thirst. She can also be an enemy, who dips and takes away the bodies. It is a resting place for many men and women who fell at the front. On March 22, 2026, from 8:30 p.m. to 21:30 p.m., join us for an evening of recollection at the Ramparts d'Ypres cemetery, one of the most beautiful cemeteries of the First World War. The vigil is open to all. 🕯️

🚧 | Worksite – Bayeux Memorial | 🌺 We are currently carrying out work on our historic and iconic Second World War memorial in Normandy. The memorial stands opposite our Bayeux War Cemetery and bears the names of over 1,700 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in the region, and during the advance to the River Seine in August. The work is expected to be completed by the end of July 2026. Please visit our website for more information.
