Day 8 Practice Recap: You know it's a good day when Luther Burden is the headline and Caleb Williams comes after that. Caleb Williams and the offense continue to take steps in the right direction each day. The best practice of camp continues to be topped by the next. Everyone got involved in the action. The first few deep passes of all of Training Camp finally connected with Olamide Zaccheaus and Rome Odunze. Yes, Rome may have gotten laid out in a real game, but I found his separation as the ball was in the air as the most notable part. But DJ Moore, Myles Boykin, Cole Kmet, and others were also recipients of some nice catch and throws as well. Colston Loveland may not have had anything notable in team drills, but he sure did impress in 1 on 1 drills for pass protection. Multiple reps where he did a great job of moving his feet and maintaining leverage. Back to Luther Burden. Wow. Just wow. Guy made a string of catches in team drills. By my count, 5. Starting with a nice layered touch throw from Caleb Williams in stride as Luther made the catch with the DB contesting. The 2nd one being the most impressive play of the day. A throw from Tyson Bagent towards the sidelines as Luther Burden adjusts to the pass with a pirouette and the ability to keep both feet in bounds with a whole body and hands in his face. That was 1st round talent. He finished the day with an early catch in the final 2-minute drill that led to a TD from Tyson Bagent. Tyson Bagent has been very consistent throughout camp. No question. Whether it be with 2nd team or 3rd team. That's all you ask for from a backup. He finished the day with a nice 2 minute drill drive with a big 4th down conversion and finished with a touchdown to Joel Wilson. Kyle Monangai takes some hard hits during live sessions. But he keeps getting back up. He keeps showing he may not be the guy to have 5+ 20-yard runs on the year, but how many 5 yard carries will he have? Seems like a lot. He always falls forward. He has a nice cutback ability. I think he will be a contributor. Everyone wants the answer at who will be the Left Tackle. I'm gonna continue my Ozzy Trapilo agenda. In my opinion, he has been the most consistent. But moreover, I think in order for Braxton Jones to hold down the job, he would have to be leaps ahead of Ozzy. I don't think that's the case. Same goes for Kiran. They all have their place to contribute. But Ozzy Trapilo is a 2nd round pick and he doesn't look lost out there. Why not just hit the ground running and let him be your LT of the future if that's the case. The defense may have had their struggles throughout the day while the offense had a big day but they once again finished strong on the final 2 minute drill forcing the 1st team offense to a 4 and out. Creating a lot of pressure by dialing up the blitz and Montez Sweat winning vs Darnell Wright. The 4th down ended in an interception as Caleb Williams just threw it up to Tyrique Stevenson. Basically a punt. Beyond the plays. You see the team is dialed into the details. The motions, the checks at the LOS, and so forth. It all seems to look organized for week 2 of Training Camp. Albeit with a few mistake sprinkled in there and Ben Johnson getting after them for a false start. But finally, just like you can't have a grandiose takeaway from a bad practice, the same can be said for a good one as well. You see progress. You're seeing patterns emerging. And that's all you're looking for this time of year. What are the trends? Well, it appears the Bears are trending in the right direction. See you Saturday and Sunday for 2 more padded practices.
