We've sent a full explanation of Element and Matrix to the Google Play Store Policy team as of 11:44 UTC and we're waiting for a response. Meanwhile we've published a blog post on the situation which we'll keep updated as it evolves: element.io/blog/element-o…
English

Google have suspended Element in the Play Store without notifying us; we're reaching out to find out what's going on. Apologies for the inconvenience; in the interim there's f-droid.org/en/packages/im… but it's a few versions behind. We'll post updates here.
English

@element_hq why is the f-droid package "a few versions behind"? will you please commit to ensuring that is not the case in the future?

@chris__barry it's true (last i checked) that they merely upload [effectively] all of your contacts' phone numbers, but given that those tend to be strongly linkable to legal IDs, they're the most valuable part of a phone's address book. so, your intended distinction didn't even occur to me.
English

"Messaging app requires disclosure of your entire address book" seems like a pretty important aspect. In the case of @signalapp, that address book is going to be hosted on @awscloud.
(Also, let's not forget "receives millions of funding from U.S. national security state").

@dmytri@dmytri
@julian0liver The really need a "requires disclosure of phone number to use" column.

@chris__barry Signal is providing what @wiretapped calls a "pinky-promise" architecture, saying sure we have access to your contact list and upload it to our severs on the AWS, but it's only to help you find your friends! Trust us! Meanwhile, they have no obvious business model.
English

@chris__barry @dmytri SGX is some "trusted computing" garbage from Intel, the purpose of which is to get Hollywood to trust your PC even though they don't trust you. And it is broken, of course. 2/2 twitter.com/pmg/status/120… #Attacks" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_…
English

@chris__barry @dmytri As their blog post you linked says, they upload hashes of phone numbers and "The obvious problem with this method is that the hash of a user identifier can almost always be inverted."
So their solution is to use SGX to assure you that their (bezos') servers aren't doing that. 1/2

Zoom shuts down an NYU academic event on zoom censorship. Facebook asks NYU researchers to stop doing research on political ads. NYU’s response will be interesting to see how even powerful universities can struggle to maintain institutional autonomy vis a vis tech companies.
