@ArionArmeniakos@uprootedoakland Oh yeah, and let’s pinch hit Lawrence Butler here for the matchup because his plate appearances have been amazing this year.
@uprootedoakland@xHalfMoon2 Wouldn’t be the first time a questionable pitching call has cost them. I understand not giving up on your guys if you’re Kotsay but how much proof do you need that certain guys just can’t handle high leverage spots?
@uprootedoakland That is true, however, it’s not like his 2025 stats are giving him much cushion for the start of 2026. But I do get what you’re saying.
@xHalfMoon2 While I do think that the clock might be ticking on Butler, you have to remember that he played in an extremely abbreviated Spring due to pretty significant injury. Probably makes for a longer leash (especially considering his contract extension).
After five innings of shutout baseball turned in by Aaron Civale, we're back to a new ballgame after a Salvador Perez solo shot off of Hogan Harris. 1-1. #Athletics
@uprootedoakland Definitely need more than a run to win. Which is why I’m questioning why your hottest hitter wasn’t in the lineup to start the game. Why is the lineup shifting every single day? Why has Kurtz been leading off 90% of the year?
@uprootedoakland I’m not sure if that’s a pro attribute for a coach when you don’t have a team with the depth to emphasize “all player involvement”. At some point you have to make tough decisions as a coach. Butler has not earned playing time this year with his plate appearances and base running.
@xHalfMoon2 Kotsay really, really emphasizes all players' involvement, so I'm not surprised. I think the tougher question will come when Cortes' playing time butts right up against Butler's. Colby Thomas is going to have a tough path with Gelof/Clarke eating up RHH playing time.
@uprootedoakland Wondering why Cortes wasn’t in the lineup today as well? Hottest hitter in the league and he’s benched to get Colby Thomas playing time? This isn’t Spring training. Every game matters.
@uprootedoakland I’d argue our bullpen has been lucky to start the year. We’re bottom half in the league in WHIP. Constantly walking batters or hitting them like Barlow just did to put them on base. That isn’t going to last. Have to learn to go with the hot hand until it’s not hot anymore.
@uprootedoakland You should hate the move to the bullpen. I can see being cautious his first one to two starts of the season, but this is start 5. He should be able to go more than 87 pitches a game. Put him out in the 6th and see how the first at bat goes, and then make a move from there.
@xHalfMoon2 Civale's pitch count game to game has hovered right around that 80-90 mark. Only exception was when he gave up five runs to the White Sox and pitched 100+. I don't hate the move to the bullpen, but I'm not sure I would have gone Harris against Perez.
@uprootedoakland I know it’s game one, but based on spring training and these at bats in game one, I’m nervous about a Kurtz/Wilson sophomore slump. Hope I’m wrong.
Nick Kurtz takes what is initially ruled a ball but is challenged by the Blue Jays and overturned as strike three. Kurtz burned twice tonight by the new ABS Challenge system. #Athletics#OpeningDay
@KevoFaded Those few other guys wouldn’t have even put us in the position to be up in the 4th quarter in those games. I’m not saying his clock management is amazing, because it clearly isn’t, but he’s the reason why we were up in those Super Bowls to begin with.
@xHalfMoon2 Oh there’s a few other guys that wouldn’t have fumbled those 4th quarter leads in those 2 superbowls. He’s a phenomenal play caller, best in the league honestly, but he’s not too great at the head coaching stuff in big games and it shows. If you think otherwise that’s just bias.

As much as I don’t like Shanahan being the leader of the team dat mf 1000% is the coach of the year
@eckxist@fivedots1221@49ersSportsTalk If he’s ready to play you play him. Y’all fans acting like you know when a player should and shouldn’t play is hilarious. The entire goal of being on an NFL team is to win the Super Bowl. If it’s a playoff game and he thinks he’s ready to go then he’ll go. We’re on our 6th LB lol
@fivedots1221@49ersSportsTalk NCCG I can see MAYBE. Only way I would 100% he should play is IN the SB. But playing with a chance to make the SB, I could see him getting geared up in that championship game (should it happen).
Kyle Shanahan said “not very high" chance that the #49ers open Fred Warner's practice window this week.
If they make it to the NFC Championship is where it gets intriguing. Just need 1 more win 👀#FTTB
@xHalfMoon2@LombardiHimself There have been other “open” options in some plays. He’s the primary target/read meaning he’s being force fed
Also, why him over Bourne or D Robinson?
@imusfan43ca@LombardiHimself Why are you acting like if we added one pass rusher our defense wouldn’t be giving up 35 points right now lmao. Our back 7 looks lost every. single. play. A bit of pass rush isn’t fixing WR’s being open every single down lol
@brndnesquivel@LombardiHimself He’s not being force fed. He’s the open man on his routes so he gets the ball and then forgets how to play fundamental football and fumbles the ball away. He’s played like dogshit all year. That’s what happens when you cry for a massive contract and don’t practice all offseason.
