She was the first woman to become a professor at the newly created University College of the West Indies (UCWI). I’ve always said this. Jamaican Carnival was supposed to be in December, structured around Mento Music, Traditional Mas was supposed to be Junkanoo, that aspect of our culture was never fostered, it was casted aside & unfortunately demonised. All of this was left stunted.

Do they know Junkunoo is a form of carnival? So even tho we didn’t have the carnival as how Trinidad did it that was our own cultural show case and form of resistance.

He’s singing the Kumina Prayer. A song first sung by Kumina Queen, Queenie Imogene Kennedy, who was taught the song when her spirit journeyed to Africa in Myal. The song, sung in the Kikongo language, can be loosely translated as the Our Father Prayer.
