From a psychology point a + button is more fun to interact with potentially resulting in more orders. And according to my research the average order per person is typically 1-2 so a drop down would not be necessary for the average person and would make the typical one click into two clicks. Typically larger quantity orders are done in a catering order separate from the regular checkout so clicking a plus button few times is not a problem that needs to be solved. From what i've seen the + has always been on the right side so putting it on the left to be different will create more friction.
