UCP PUTS VITAL RESEARCH AND POST-SECONDARIES’ CREDIBILITY AT RISK EDMONTON — On Thursday, the Advanced Education Minister Rajan Sawhney told media she had “no idea” how $500 million in federal grant funding to Alberta post-secondary institutions was being spent.   “The Minister either lied or is utterly incompetent,” said Rhiannon Hoyle, Alberta NDP Critic for Advanced Education.    “As many folks have pointed out to the Minister, she could just use a little internet search engine called Google and to find comprehensive federally-funded research information that is helping Alberta as a leader in the nation, which will all be at risk because of the UPC’s gatekeeping legislation.”   Hoyle Googled the information herself and reminded the Minister that Alberta is at risk of losing incredible post-secondary researchers who serve as Canada Research Chairs and who receive federal funding for very important work on topics including, but not limited to:
 •Neuroscience, Brain Health and Exercise •Patient and Family-Centred Cancer Survivorship •Community Disaster Research •Microbiome Research •Thermodynamics •Wild Microbiome and Infections •RNA and Protein Biophysics •Critical Border Studies •Politics of Citizenship and Human Rights   In addition, institutions have reminded the government that a huge portion of their research funding is federal in source. The University of Calgary, for instance, received $190M in 2023 (35 per cent of the university’s research funding) from the federal government.   Student leaders have also expressed concernwith a UCP government that has already defunded post-secondary institutions by $80 million this year and see Bill 18 as just another way to stifle funding.   “If Minister Sawhney truly couldn’t find this information then certainly, had she done the right thing and consulted with post-secondary institutions before the introduction of Bill 18, she wouldn’t be scratching her head about where $500 million in federal grant funding is going,” said Hoyle.

"Bill 18 is nothing short of an assault on our post-secondary institutions that no one saw coming. Our universities exist to stimulate ideas and debate. Stifling that debate limits the scope of discovery. “We currently have two of the top 10 research universities in Canada and an amazing network of connected colleges and institutions throughout the province. Albertans could lose all of this amazing, important work with Danielle Smith’s gatekeeping bill that is nothing more than a spool of ideological red tape.  “When intellectual freedom is stifled, it hacks away at the reputation that Alberta has rightfully earned, and serious researchers and academics will go elsewhere.” #ableg #abpoli

Rachel Notley, Leader of the Alberta NDP Official Opposition, issued the following statement in response to Bill 18: Provincial Priorities Act:   “This new legislation is going to wrap municipalities, post-secondary institutions and health authorities in a giant spool of red tape.   “Danielle Smith's government has neglected the municipalities that deliver critical services and build needed housing and infrastructure. For her to be playing petulant partisan games is not securing Albertans their share of federal dollars.   “Under her watch, Albertans with diabetes have been told they won’t be able to access critical, expensive diabetes medication. Alberta women won’t be able to access contraception. And now, Danielle Smith wants to continue an endless tirade that will result in more red tape for municipalities on the front lines of building critical housing and infrastructure our communities need.   “This Bill will make things more expensive for Albertans who need these critical infrastructure investments, and will leave funds on the table in Ottawa instead of getting Albertans what they deserve.    “Albertans haven’t seen any benefit in their health care, in our school systems, or in their household budget at the end of the day as a result of Smith’s squabbles with the federal government. This Bill will be no different. Danielle Smith’s record of achieving nothing speaks for itself.”
