One of the greatest shots in Premier League history 🤩 Mourinho looks back at his team before Chelsea begin their title defence at Wigan in August 2005.

@byVaundy10 yep that's what i mean by the "big" CONMEBOL nations, it ends up always being the same few that make it to the later stages of the tournament. it's still exciting when other countries like ecuador or peru make it to the knockouts

@APortInAnyStorm The problem is that CONMEBOL nations take advantage of playing at home, when you take them away from there, they're as useless as San Marino. (Except for Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay)

world cup elitism never made sense to me. the magic of the whole thing is when a new country qualifies or a dark horse makes a surprising run in the knockouts. watching the same "big" UEFA/CONMEBOL nations playing each other every single tournament just gets boring

@tv5834472 agreed, 32 teams was a good number for the final tournament. but people seem to think some countries/confederations should have a god-given right to qualify for the world cup when they're simply not good enough either way (e.g. italy)

@APortInAnyStorm the magic of qualifying exists because there is a challenge to it. expanding the format and allowing more nations to qualify naturally makes this a less exciting achievment

@nun_enjoyer exactly, football would be nothing if the big teams just won all the games and all the trophies. underdog stories are always the best ones

@APortInAnyStorm They think only big countries can win games but forget (or dont even watch games) that in football anything can happen. Germany getting knocked out by South Korea at group stage in 2018 will always be a sweet memory.
