@ruth_deyermond @jc_nothias Excellent thread; just on this point my hunch is that at bottom it's nothing more than the fact that Trump loves 'strongmen' and imagines himself as being among them. That's why he's desperate to please them, to the point of self-abasement.

@jc_nothias Trump took, and takes, Russia and Putin very seriously - just not as a threat. Wanting to improve relations with Russia was one of the few consistent elements of his foreign policy. Who can say why?
