Considering the main complaint I heard from people over here with the first movie was "too much talking; needed more mecha fights and action" I'd say they know their fanbase well.

First Japanese trailer: cryptic, psychological, focused on the characters internal struggles like the novels. First US trailer: random mecha sequences and explosions from the 2nd and 3rd act. Bandai really has no respect for the US fandom.
