Thoroughly enjoyed Sundin’s memoir with @AmyfStuart. Loved the hockey stories and his time with the Leafs, but I especially enjoyed learning more about his life in Sweden before making it to the NHL

@mikecommito @dannyd1976 Mike… thank you! That means a lot. I also loved learning about his life in Sweden pre-draft, and meeting his amazing family. I fell in love with the country and can’t wait to go back.

The new @OHFHockey rules on player movement & tampering are exactly the opposite of what's needed to grow the sport & keep it local, accessible & cost-effective. It also puts coaches (mostly parent volunteers like me) in an impossible position. Shame. ohf.on.ca/Player-Movement

Watching a u11 tourney game this morning, it’s wild to me that half-ice hockey stops after U9 in Canada (and faced soooo much backlash when implemented). It takes 60+ strides for these kids to go end to end. Zero skill development. @HockeyCanada @OHFHockey need to rethink.

I watched that dumb fight last night. My takeaway: I could probably score a few goals in a shootout on Ken Dryden, a six time Stanley Cup winning hall of famer who’s ~30 years older than me. That wouldn’t make me a great hockey player.

@LouiseMartinCBC I was in the summerside superstore and the power went out. Pitch black until the generator kicked in, then 10 mins on the clock to cash everyone out. By the time I got to my car the parking lot had 6 inches of water in spots!

I've been coaching for 10 years, and every year it gets harder and more time consuming. New rules and guidelines and training and hoops to jump through, all meant to protect the organizations, not the volunteers.

Another insight into why Canada's hockey participation is cratering is the ever increasing burden on parent volunteers. I'm not talking abt practices/games. It's dozens of hours of costly mandatory training, forensic level team banking rules, thick layers of red tape everywhere.

Aside from the accolades Wheeler points out (every possible hockey title), Mogilny's defection in 1989 kicked open the door to the NHL in a way that changed the sport drastically and permanently. He seriously risked his life and likely never recovered from the trauma of it.

See @scottcwheeler thread on Alexander Mogilny and the Hockey Hall of Fame. I did a ton of reading on Mogilny while researching Mats Sundin's memoir. The deeper you go into his story, the more you understand what a travesty his exclusion from the HHOF is, year after year.
Scott Wheeler@scottcwheeler

Doing a proper ghost committee at The Athletic the last few years has given me an appreciation for this process. But: Jeremy Roenick never won the Cup, never won an NHL award, was never a First OR Second All-Star team, and finished T6 in the league in scoring in his best season.
