A major new longitudinal study published in JAMA Health Forum followed more than 463,000 adolescents and found that cannabis use was associated with double the risk of developing psychotic and bipolar disorders, as well as increased risk for depression and anxiety. Notably, cannabis use preceded psychiatric diagnoses by nearly two years on average—and the elevated risk remained even after accounting for prior mental health conditions. This was a really dramatic improvement from quitting in a really sick population of people with PTSD and Cannabis Use Disorder. I would suggest there is no medication that would show nearly as much benefit as quitting cannabis did.

I spoke to a 23-year-old recovering from CIP, Cannabis-Induced Psychosis. He was scared. 😔💔 There is a better chance of recovering from a meth-induced psychosis than a cannabis-induced psychosis. 👩‍🔬 Research shows that not all substance-induced psychosis carries the same long-term risk. A large Danish study found that nearly 47% of people who experienced cannabis-induced psychosis later developed schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. In comparison, psychosis related to stimulants like methamphetamine showed a lower conversion rate (around 30%) to schizophrenia. While any drug-induced psychosis is serious, cannabis-induced psychosis carries one of the highest risks of progressing to a chronic psychotic disorder.
