The UK government today announcing ceding the British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius against the will of most islanders is a betrayal of Chagos people, environmental protections and western security interests. It sets a dangerous precedent for other overseas territories too.

The Chagos Islands decision has made me more angry than anything else Labour has done since getting back in. Both at them, and the Tories for letting us get here. The stupidity of those running this country is dangerous and destructive. We aren’t even 100 days in.

Apparently we have a £22bn blackhole and we just agreed to handover some of the most geostrategically valuable land in the world away and to somehow also agreed to pay for it. 🙃

The Mauritian claim on the Chagos Islands is laughable. I am all up for the right of Chagossians to return and even reclaim their sovereignty, this decision has simply handed over their home to a different country.
