@AdairCoach @ADirector33 True. guess it depends on when they turn 19 in the senior year. before sept 1 looks like clock starts. after sept 1 clock starts when they enroll. will def affect the early enrollment process as a kid could literally be ineligible in the CFP his 5th year if he enrolled early!

@Crobo1982 @ADirector33 I think it does. Kid turns 19 in August then their Senior HS Season becomes year one of College eligibility thus they only have 4 season.

The redshirt is dead — and most programs aren’t ready for what that means. Every scholarship now starts a 5-year clock the moment a kid enrolls or turns 19. No extensions. No medical freezes. That changes recruiting, roster building, and player development in one stroke. Birthday math is now part of every offer conversation. A kid who turns 19 before he steps on campus has already burned time. Coaches who ignore that will regret it. The portal gets leaner but more expensive. Fewer players with extra eligibility means a smaller pool — and the ones in it will cost more. The programs that win this era won’t be the ones with the most NIL money. They’ll be the ones who evaluate 17-year-olds better than everyone else and stop hiding developmental needs behind a redshirt year. @WinterSportsLaw Curious how this would affect football early enrollees that are 19 when the season ends and they enroll early? Will it now discourage early enrolling?

I’ve seen some people posting inaccurate information about the NCAA’s new eligibility rule. An athlete’s 5 year clock does not start when he or she turns 19 if they are not yet enrolled in college. It starts the academic year after his or her 19th birthday.

@ADirector33 There’s a decades worth of kids who willingly repeated 8th grade to develop more before playing in HS. All those kids who are the future 4/5 stars in all sports just lost a year in the NCAA. The SEC IMO gets screwed the most as they are notorious for hiding guys w gray/redshirts

My name is Hampton Smith. I am the class of 2028. Although I am an incoming junior, I’m only 15 years old. I’ve started since Freshman year and led the Brookhaven HS (Mississippi) 5A state championship team in tackles in 2025 (20 tackles championship game, 117 for 25/sophomore season, 211 career tackles). I received my first college football offer last month. As a LB for the BHS Panthers (2025 State Champs beating B2B champs, West Point HS), I have been working hard in the off-season grind with much more to come.
