Our CCC members on the ground in Denver had a lovely meet up! ETHDenver may be a little quieter this year but there's a heap of work keeping us all busy.

Crypto has a "credibility for sale" problem, and it’s costing founders their reputations. We analyzed 2,893 press releases over four months to see how the "wire service" machine actually works. The results were worse than we thought: 62% of crypto press releases come from projects flagged as high-risk or outright scams. Here is how the crypto press release distribution industry is laundering reputation.

I analyzed robots.txt files of 50 crypto news sites to see how they treat AI bots. Only 3 sites block AI, and CoinDesk blocks the most. But all 3 do it inconsistently and miss some bots. Thread 🧵

Journalism matters. The accounts cited here delivering breaking news rely on... journalists. This is not a jab at Blockworks -- it's great they are finding a profitable vertical in crypto information. But crypto is not fine without newsrooms and journalists. The opposite is true: crypto doesn't have ENOUGH quality journalism. We need more investigations, more scoops. We need reporters doing the legwork, not just KOLs spouting their thoughts on X. Uncovering dirt, fact checking, data crunching, putting faces and human stories to this mind-boggling industry, UNCOVERING DIRT, etc... all the hard work that's under appreciated but so crucial. It's why I'm here, and why @DefiantNews is here.
Route 2 FI@Route2FI

About Blockworks shutting down their news division: Tbh, you didn't have to be a rocket scientist to see this would happen sooner or later. The same is true for eg. CoinDesk. Crypto news have changed a lot over the years, and I feel what was the kicker was the arrival of Tree of Alpha, @tier10k, and later Tree News. They provided speed and made news mainstream for CT. For non-BREAKING news we're already well covered from different newsletters and Telegram channels from VCs and KOLs. For speedy news just follow these accounts and channels: 1. @zoomerfied and TG: t.me/ZoomerfiedNews 2. @AggrNews and TG: t.me/AGGRNEWSWIRE 3. t.me/infinityhedge You could also include Solid Intel and Wu Blockchain into the mix here, but I think the 3 above covers the most. And just to end this, not trying to mock Blockworks here, and I am sure these people will find similar positions or other roles.

jk pr/comms people are some of the most t-shaped operators in the game - see across functions, manage chaos and somehow make it all sound intentional. The job description should honestly read: think like a strategist, act like a firefighter and communicate like a diplomat. Mad respect to everyone doing this work with so much grace ILY @radio_leila @davidjgoosey @candicekteo @miakoddda @0xcoolgirl @__arielle__ @chizhao @julie_mo @emma_nibhroin @Ruth_De_Freitas the whole @Crypto_Comms_ crew + tag whoever I missed here 🫶

I was on a call with someone from a major crypto project. They let their huge upcoming announcement slip. I (obviously) did not tell anyone, and the launch ultimately went really well! But please don't do this. You don't know who is listening. You don't know who will scoop your story. You and your team have worked so hard – don't spoil it at the last minute! Sincerely, A concerned PR person.

Strong comms shape crypto as much as strong code. Definitely a stage-worthy topic in itself.
Natalie Rix@Natalie_Rix

Had the best time talking all things crypto comms at @PubKey_NYC last week alongside @KeithGrossman @aubreystrobel and @elenanisonoff. Top takeaways included: - The media is approaching blockchain as a vertical beat when it's really horizontal--shaping all aspects of art, culture, and of course, finance. That creates challenges for comms people who want to win over reporters covering different beats. - When considering using new buzzwords, meet your audience where they are and ditch the jargon unless it's a crypto-native product. - Misinformation travels FAST in crypto. Make sure you have a plan in place to correct the facts quickly. So honored to be included and excited for what Aubrey and Elena are building with @Halcyon !!

If you're going to a crypto conference, the press room might just be your most underrated tool. Too often, founders and communication leads overlook it, or don’t know how to make the most of it. But here’s the thing: if you want media coverage, you need to meet journalists. And that starts with knowing how the press room works. At @YAPGlobalTeam we’ve run press rooms at @ETHCC, @Ethereumdenver, @SolanaCrossroad, @EBlockchainCon among many others. Here’s what projects need to know: 1. Start with the media list. Most conferences release a list of attending journalists two weeks before. Scan it. See who covers your space. Highlight who you'd like to meet. 2. Reach out to the press agency ahead of time. If there’s an official PR team, drop them a note. Let them know who you want to talk to, they might already be planning time with the journo and can help make the intro. 3. Say hi to the press team on-site. We’re usually in or near the press room. If you’ve spotted a journalist on the list, swing by and tell us. If they’re around, we’ll help connect you. 4. Recce the press room. If you've got a media interview scheduled, you get access to the press room. I highly recommend locating it and checking it out well before your interview so you have time to prep for it. 5. Flip the script. When you meet a journalist, don’t just talk about yourself. Ask who they’re hoping to connect with. It might be you, or someone you can introduce them to. Running a company is hard enough. Let us help you get the story out there.
