To say “God is love” is to say God is a constant holding on and letting go, pulling in and pushing out, longing for intimacy and allowing for liberty. And the entire architectural grid of creation is built for that glorious tension with all its potential for reproduction in its image. All sound theology—accurate rendering of the character of God—simply builds out a series of doctrinal models that constitute explanations of God's love in His relational dealings with all free moral agents. Who is God in relation to His creation in general and in relation to those who violate the integrity of other-centered existence in particular? That’s the question all good theology is endeavoring to answer. “God is love. Those who live in love, live in God, and God lives in them” (1 John 4:16). That’s the whole truth in a nutshell. Everything else in theology is exposition, explanation, elaboration of that one reality.
