@dhh Are there aftermarket battery folks? Have old macbook airs, intel, this would be chefs kiss if i can get the battery to last more than 1 minute....

Love how many computers Omarchy have brought back to life. Windows and macOS will end-of-life devices willy-nilly, but Linux revives them from obsolence, and proves that even a 2012 CPU is PLENTY FAST for so many things. Even a gorgeous tiling window manager like Hyprland.
BrandonC@BGCryderman
Copped another 2012 MacBook Pro on marketplace. ($40) Thank you to Omarchy (linux distro by @dhh) for making it so simple to leverage these devices.

@geekcubano @dhh @AsahiLinux Feel free to add such support Dany. Start here: github.com/basecamp/omarc…
@AsahiLinux is an amazing project, from which Asahi ALARM was able to continue supporting Arch Linux on ARM. But so far only M1 and M2 can boot from it. Still amazing, because M1 is already plenty.
English

@dhh You should try to add support for Apple Silicon too. I’m sure the guys from @AsahiLinux would love the assist.

That's great, I really appreciate that. However, one important element is missing - the availability...

@DoppioJP @damiankleiman @dhh How does VMware compare to running on bare metal? I was looking at asahi linux, but that is only for "older" m series macs.
English

Love it. Now imagine a world where new macs weren't held hostage by macOS.
vogel@ryanvogel
I don’t know how to explain it but this just looks right Omarchy 🤝 Mac Pro
English

@fleischersatz @dhh Yes, @Apple has indeed done the crucial push for computing excellence, especially in personal computers. I will be ever so grateful for that. Others stepping up to chase that. Great times!
However, I still wish for Boot Camp revival on M machines supporting Linux. Do it @Apple!
English

@dhh Okay. Except 90% of modern computing wouldn't exist without the entire industry being able to leech off of Apple's R&D budget.
English

@ar0nbg @damiankleiman @dhh My suggestion: use Omarchy on VMware while keeping macOS only for your XCode
github.com/basecamp/omarc…
English

@damiankleiman @dhh To build/bundle iOS app. You can already do it with things like expo from any OS but way less convenient in my experience. Takes a lot longer + costs money. But if you have a suggestions let me know!
English

@brandonstlucas @dhh Not painful at all. A little longer than usual 5 minutes, because some packages will be compiled during installation. See: github.com/basecamp/omarc…
English

@dhh How painful is it to install on M1/M2 macs with asahi? Is it well documented?
English

@MichalAiWorld @dhh VMware or Parallels and you can have it on M3 as well. Instructions here: github.com/basecamp/omarc…
English

@dhh Dang it. I'm on m3.
Oh well will wait.
Thanks for the reply!
English

@oliviscusAI That will not maintain the eye contact. The receiver might see the other person looking into camera, but if I look at the camera, I am not looking at the interlocutor’s eyes.
This youtu.be/2AecAXinars from @DIYPerks is a solution allowing for real eye contact on video calls

@dazonic @dhh @novaruntime I doubt that developers, who switch to Linux (incl. Omarchy), away from macOS, look for making any impact on Apple. It’s wonderful that we have more to choose from these days!
English

@dhh @novaruntime They’re still selling Macs in record numbers, the developers they have lost to Linux wouldn’t even register as a blip. Bit of hyperbole here lol
English

@techskillissues @dhh In the Omarchy code there is a lot of reusable techniques which can be applied on your own system. I have applied some of them even on macOS, so at least my Alacritty+Zellij could have Omarchy vibes. Well, to be honest, I did that before Omarchy, re-using aesthetics from Omakub.
English

Omarchy comes with strong lineup of default themes, but the community has been adding a million more on top of that. Love to see it.
Taha@tahayvr
New themes added to the "Extra themes" page in Omarchy manual: learn.omacom.io/2/the-omarchy-…
English

@Ahmed_Ali_Saber @dhh Because, at this stage, it simplifies the Omarchy development process. It also helps to commit to use Omarchy only, without switching between OSes.
It takes about 5 minutes to install Omarchy. Put a pendrive into USB and you have dual boot. If it’s too slow, use external SSD.
English

@dhh Why there is no choice to dual boot omarchy by default?
Why I have to format my hard disk to install omarchy?
Really why?
English

@dhh How do you get the whole system to follow the colour scheme?
English

@Terabytesoftw @dhh Look who will be speaking at omacon.org - @thdxr
Looks like close cooperation between OpenCode and Omarchy. 💪
English

@dhh It would be great to add support for OpenCode app; currently, updates are done via AUR packages, but sometimes they take a long time to update.
English

Omarchy 3.4 RC1 is ready for folks willing to help test the next release. Unified screenshot flow, tailored Tmux setup, Asus Zephyrus compatibility, keyboard backlight theme syncs, two new themes, tons of fixes. Shaping up super nice! github.com/basecamp/omarc…

English

@primex001 @dhh @0xMajinBuu Depends how you look at it.
Downgrade to M2 and you can have it using Asahi-ALARM trick as the base OS. Any performance loss vs M3 you will gain back thanks to Omarchy efficiency on M2.
On VMware once it is full screen - feels like base OS. And will make your M3 even faster!
English

@kk5Ai_world @dhh I wonder if @Apple is sending someone there to secretly gather some insights. Or maybe inspire @Apple to bring back Boot Camp idea, but this time to support installing Arch Linux? @AsahiLinux and the asahi-alarm.org
English

"Sold out" for a niche dev aesthetics conference is wild. A few years ago this crowd was scattered across Discord servers and lonely blog posts.
TUIs, tmux, and vim configs becoming conference-worthy tells you something about the pendulum swinging back from "everything must be a web app" maximalism.
English

Omacon is sold out! Looking forward to meeting a bunch of nerds and geek out together over TUIs, tmux, aesthetics, developer ergonomics, code, and community. We're going to have a great time in New York. And we'll record everything for those who couldn't make it too 🤘
DHH@dhh
Omacon is happening April 10 at the Shopify SoHo Space in New York City. Eight great speakers, 130 attendees, and a guaranteed good time with folks who love THE NEW LINUX VIBE. Tickets go on sale in 24 hours. Set your alarm! omacon.org
English

@rodrigoromo28 @dhh You can! That’s the beauty of open source.
I have recently replaced Limine with GRUB on Omarchy 3.3.3 so an old white MacBook from 2010 could have Omarchy.
English

@dhh I wish I could chose to install or not the Bootloader or even chose what bootloader to install.
English

@yamiships @dhh On some older computers or even in VMware, Ghostty takes a lot of CPU resources because the GPU acceleration is done by software. Great that Alacritty is there as a fallback.
English
