The print was initially created by Hokusai around 1830, but the publishing date is 1832. It was printed in a new and exotic color, Prussian blue, unknown to Japan prior to this work.

Under The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most immediately recognized artworks. A woodblock print, using the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e technique was created as a part of his series titled 36 famous views of Mount Fuji, a sacred mountain in Japan.

Can you feel the sizzling summer sun on your skin? ☀️ 🌾 In 1888, Vincent van Gogh left Paris and moved to Arles in the south of France. That summer, he painted a series of vibrant wheat fields, including this stunning piece. 🚨rijksmuseum.nl/en/stories/dut…

Artist’s painting of a hippopotamus on a flake of limestone. From Deir el-Bahri, Thebes, Egypt, c.1479–1425 BC. Perhaps a practice sketch, or a template, or maybe just a doodle of a hippo from 3,500 years ago! 🦛❤️ 📷 The Met metmuseum.org/art/collection… #Archaeology

“In 2020, only 17% of 13-year-olds surveyed said they read for fun almost every day. That figure was 27% in 2012 and 35% when data collection began in 1984.” Well this is utterly depressing. Is This the End of Reading? chronicle.com/article/is-thi…

🌊 Van Gogh sought a really ‘blue sea’ and ‘blue sky’ at the French coast. He travelled from Arles to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean. He observed that the sea had ‘a colour like mackerel', its colours continually changing.

Born #OnThisDay in 1785, #JohnJamesAudubon traveled thousands of miles to watch, hunt and draw his birds. In the 1830s, just like today, people marveled at his birds’ liveliness, as if they might fly off the page in a ruffle of feathers 🕊️ 🐦"Plate 102, Blue Jay" (1824–38)
