He visited EU-funded projects in Malta & Gozo, namely the 2nd electricity interconnector between Malta & Sicily, the RO plant in Ħondoq ir-Rummien, & the Ċittadella. These projects show how EU investment supports energy security, sustainability & regional development

We are pleased to have welcomed Executive VP @RaffaeleFitto to Malta for discussions with national authorities on the implementation and future of EU cohesion policy, the next European budget, and the challenges and opportunities concerning islands and the Mediterranean.

In Valletta we met with @EU_Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms @RaffaeleFitto to discuss the vital role of EU Cohesion Policy for islands and peripheral regions, strengthening connectivity, competitiveness and resilience. Ongoing negotiations on the next MFF must respond to emerging pressures, while safeguarding our commitment to convergence, cohesion and resilience across the Union.

🇪🇺🇲🇹 Appena arrivato in missione ufficiale a Malta ho visitato il secondo interconnettore elettrico tra #Malta e #Sicilia, il più grande investimento della politica di coesione europea nel Paese. 💡 Un progetto strategico che rafforzerà la sicurezza energetica, sostenendo allo stesso tempo lo sviluppo delle energie rinnovabili e l’elettrificazione. 🤝 La visita si è svolta insieme a @stefanzrinzo, Ministro per i Fondi europei e l’Attuazione del programma elettorale, e @Miriamdalli, Ministro per l’Economia, l’Impresa e i Progetti strategici. 🇬🇧 Upon arriving in Malta on an official mission, I visited the second electricity interconnector between Malta and Sicily, the largest investment of EU cohesion policy in the country. 💡A strategic project that will strengthen energy security while supporting the development of renewable energy and electrification. 🤝The visit took place together with Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Minister for EU Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme, and Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects.

We had a very positive exchange on the main issues of European policy, in particular the next European budget, cohesion policy, and the challenges and opportunities concerning islands and the #Mediterranean.

🇪🇺🇲🇹 Questa mattina a Malta ho visitato il nuovo impianto di desalinizzazione a osmosi inversa di #Ħondoq, a #Gozo. Un progetto strategico, del valore di circa 165 milioni di euro, realizzato anche con fondi europei, che rafforza la sicurezza idrica dell’isola e migliora la qualità dell’acqua. Con una capacità di produzione di 9.000 m³ al giorno, l’impianto garantisce a Gozo una fornitura più sicura, rendendo l’isola autosufficiente dal punto di vista idrico. La gestione dell’acqua è una sfida di assoluta importanza per tutta l’Europa ed è importante vedere progetti efficienti e concreti, sostenuti dalle risorse della politica di coesione, che intervengono direttamente a beneficio dei cittadini. 🇬🇧 This morning in #Malta I visited the new reverse osmosis desalination plant in Ħondoq, in Gozo. A strategic project worth around €165 million, also supported by #Europeanfunds, which strengthens the island’s water security and improves water quality. With a production capacity of 9,000 m³ per day, the plant ensures a more secure water supply for Gozo, making the island self-sufficient in terms of water. Water management is a challenge of fundamental importance across Europe, and it is important to see efficient and concrete projects, supported by cohesion policy resources, that deliver direct benefits for citizens.

🇪🇺🇲🇹 Questa mattina a Gozo ho visitato la #Cittadella, oggetto di un importante progetto di riqualificazione realizzato anche grazie ai fondi della politica di coesione. Un intervento che ha contribuito al restauro e alla valorizzazione di uno dei luoghi più simbolici dell’isola, migliorandone l’accessibilità e l’esperienza per i visitatori, nel pieno rispetto del suo straordinario patrimonio culturale. I finanziamenti europei hanno già sostenuto questo percorso, ma è fondamentale continuare a investire nella tutela e nella valorizzazione della Cittadella, affinché resti un punto di riferimento culturale e un motore di sviluppo per il territorio. 🇬🇧 This morning in Gozo I visited the Cittadella, which has been the focus of an important rehabilitation project carried out also thanks to cohesion policy funds. This intervention has helped restore and enhance one of the island’s most symbolic sites, improving accessibility and the overall visitor experience while fully respecting its extraordinary cultural heritage. European funding has already supported this path, but it is essential to continue investing in the protection and enhancement of the Cittadella so that it can remain a cultural landmark and a driver of development for the territory.
