The Clash played a benefit concert in support of striking miners 40 years ago today.
The gig - billed as ’Scargill’s Christmas Party’ was held at the Brixton Academy, London, on 7 December 1984.

From today, women effectively work for free until the rest of the year due to the gender pay gap. It’s two days earlier than last year because the gap has grown for the first time since 2013. We must end the undervaluation of women’s work for good.

The Durham Miners' Association was founded #OnThisDay in 1869. Pictured is the first generation of the union’s leaders. Within three years of its founding, the DMA had secured the abolition of the detested system of bonded labour and had created the @DurhamGala. 🧵 (1/4)

@EPWebber He also survived the Western Front, where he looked after the horses and went deaf from the noise of the big guns. A humble man I think about quite often

@CaroSanderson Oh wow - what a great piece of family history to have. I have the greatest respect for men who were able to endure decades labouring in the heat and darkness underground, quite an achievement.

Great to have the excellent @orgreavejustice campaign in Parliament today. The wait for justice has been far too long. #fullinquirynow

Justice for Retired Miners in today's budget. After years of campaigning the Mineworkers Pension Scheme Investment Reserve Fund will be transferred giving retired miners & widows the pension justice they deserve. This is a huge win for our coalfield communities.#PensionJustice ⚖️

Wonderful to see @durhamcathedral adorned with miners banners from across the coalfield. The ‘Solidarity Forever’ exhibition opened today, marking 40 years since the Miners' Strike. It runs until November 7. Here's a selection of the banners on display… (1/11)

Remembering #Aberfan 58 years on. ⏰ 21.10.1966 144 9.13AM, is made from concrete and corten steel. It contains 144 clocks – the same number of adults and children who died when a colliery spoil tip collapsed into homes and Pantglas Junior School. Thread ⬇️

Today I am remembering David Thomas, my children’s 3 x great grandfather, who died alongside 438 other miners & a rescuer in the Senghenydd explosion on 14 Oct 1913. David left behind a widow, Mary Ann, and 5 children, who had to walk forward into an uncertain future without him.
