A young woman who stood up to a man who sexually assaulted her hopes he will understand some of the pain she has suffered now he is behind bars. Care worker Eghe Egbon disregarded her repeated attempts to refuse his sexual advances and took advantage of her at his home in December 2023. He waited until the woman, who was 19 at the time, was lying on his sofa incapacitated through intoxication before trying again, knowing that it was impossible for her to consent. The 54-year-old, of Coundon, was found guilty of sexual assault by penetration following a trial at Durham Crown Court in April. Earlier this month, he was sentenced to five years in prison, required to sign the sex offenders' register indefinitely and handed a ten-year restraining order.

Prosecutor Ben Thompson said that during an online chat with another paedophile, Smith was asked: “How young do you like?” The defendant, from Christchurch, replied: “Literally any age to be honest. The younger the better.” A search of Smith’s mobile phone and two tablets after he was arrested revealed a stash of images – including 45 of the most serious category A, 22 of which were videos. Smith also had 83 category B and 129 category C images, and videos of a woman having sex with a dog. Investigations of Smith’s devices revealed he had asked for and been offered indecent images of children on the app Telegram and another social media chat channel. Mr Thompson said Dorset Police had been alerted to Smith’s activities by the National Crime Agency who had traced his internet address to his mother’s home. When police raided the house on 16th April last year at 7am, Smith was found upstairs asleep in bed. He answered “no comment” when interviewed by police but later pleaded guilty to six offences at magistrates court earlier this year. Smith admitted three charges of possessing indecent images of children along with one charge of possession of a prohibited image and one of possession of extreme pornography. He also pleaded guilty to distributing a category A indecent image of a child in the form of a video which was sent on 23rd March last year at 1.15am. Mr Thompson said investigations had proved that Smith had started downloading indecent images of children in March 2021 when he was 16. He had continued up until 22nd March last year when he was 20. His parents, who were in court for the sentencing, were supporting him, and his aunt and uncle had written to the judge asking for clemency. Addressing the barrister, Judge Jonathan Fuller KC said he was concerned that search terms Smith used on the internet, and other “indications”, showed the defendant was “interested" in children of any age. The judge said the evidence showed Smith also had a “fairly long standing interest” in indecent images of children. But he said he felt a two-year community order, which would involve Smith embarking on a rehabilitation programme, was better than prison. Judge Fuller said Smith would have gone to prison for 12-18 months, serving around half of that. He said he felt a “more constructive course and in the public interest” was for Smith to go into a rehabilitation programme but he warned him that if he did not comply with any probation orders he would go to jail. He also told Smith that he regarded this “as an exceptional case” Smith was given a two-year community rehabilitation order and 10 days of rehabilitation activity. even if you don't believe in prison abolition, the question must be asked, what purpose do they serve? if it is to rehabilitate, they've proven remarkably bad at their jobs. if it is to punish, they still do a pretty lousy job at that.

A German-born man of Turkish descent (45) has been arrested after a mass shooting at a mother-and-child refuge in Stade, Lower Saxony, Germany, that left six people dead and two injured. The suspect, driving a tuned Mercedes-AMG, was chased by police along the B73 and stopped with shots fired. The suspect is a 45-year-old man of Turkish descent who was born in Germany.
