It's called the LBMA Gold Price. Used to be the London Gold Fix. Five banks: JPMorgan, HSBC, Scotia, Barclays, UBS. A chairman throws out a price. Each bank says buy or sell. They adjust until supply meets demand. Then they publish the number that determines every gold contract, every ETF, every central bank reserve on earth. $70 billion trades daily based on this. Barclays got fined $44 million for manipulating the fix. JP Morgan paid $920 million for precious metals spoofing. Their head of trading was convicted after 16 years of fraud. Deutsche Bank settled manipulation claims and handed over evidence of how the other banks communicated during the fix. The contents were never released. The same banks convicted of manipulation still set the price. Every time they suppress the paper price below physical reality, it widens the gap between paper gold and real metal. COMEX vault inventory has dropped 75% since 2020. Physical is leaving the system. The 300:1 paper-to-physical ratio in silver is the most extreme in commodity market history. When that ratio breaks, it doesn't break slowly. Central banks bought 1,136 tonnes of gold in 2023 and 1,037 tonnes in 2024. The entities that literally print money are trading it for metal at the fastest pace since 1967. Last time they bought this aggressively, gold went from $35 to $850. That's 2,300% in a decade. The miners are where the real leverage sits. When gold went from $120 to $850 in the 1970s, Barrick returned over 4,000%. Right now the GDX (gold miners ETF) trades at one of the widest discounts to spot gold in 20 years. The metal hit all-time highs. The miners haven't caught up. That gap closes violently. Specific plays: Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS) and Sprott Physical Silver Trust (PSLV) hold allocated metal, not paper claims.
