Does Zone 2 matter if your main goal is getting stronger? Yes. For lifters, Zone 2 matters because it builds aerobic capacity. And when cardio + lifting are programmed well, you can improve conditioning without automatically sacrificing strength or muscle. Powerlifting and bodybuilding both use heavy weights, but they optimize different outcomes: max strength in the big 3 vs muscle growth across the whole body. If your goal is powerlifting, focus on practicing the big 3 by lifting heavier, resting longer, and using accessory muscle groups to build up weak links, without letting fatigue ruin your heavy days. If your goal is bodybuilding, chase high-quality tension, rack up enough weekly “hard sets,” and use more angles + isolations to develop each muscle. You can live on the spectrum (hello, powerbuilding) but the simplest setup is choosing what you want to prioritize for the next 8-12 weeks to start. Hypertrophy vs Strength: same equipment, different goal 👇 💪 Hypertrophy (size): build muscle by accumulating enough hard sets over time (often moderate-to-higher reps, close to failure). 🏋️‍♂️ Strength: get better at producing force by practicing heavier, lower-rep work (plus smart accessory volume). Fitbod's quick cheat sheet: 📝 If your goal is to build muscle (hypertrophy): ➡️ Moderate reps, usually ~6–12, sometimes higher ➡️ Moderate loads + more total hard work ➡️ Mix of compound + isolation If your goal is to life heavier (strength): ➡️ Typically lower reps, ~3–6, sometimes 1–5 ➡️ Heavier loads, longer rests ➡️ Emphasis on compound lifts, with accessory work to support them 💡 Adequate rest and recovery matters for both: take as long as you need to hit quality sets.
