@Saz_2604 I'm assuming the majority of this opinion is held by the right-wing neo-nazi/porn addicted crowd gathered by the character designs and like to superimpose their ideologies - who never played the game to begin with (i.e. Stellar Blade/Pragmata)
not a real part of the fanbase
English

@Fminus14 Large subsect of the fanbase who got into it during 2 and think the series is heavy right wing with anti immigration, pro religion, homophobic rhetoric. I actively dislike 2 selling the best cause they will always use it in arguments as if its fan service mattered in selling it.

@BackseatSakurai Exactly, they're all RPGs at the end of the day. I'm criticizing people who'll instantly turn down JRPGs because of their japanese identity (anime) but would jump for joy at the mention of a japanese game for children (mascot IP with minimal japanese identity)
English

@Fminus14 So what? JRPGs were directly inspired by western RPGs, and we can trace it back to D&D. the greater point is the cultures are in conversation in a way that the reductive framing deliberately obscures.

@BackseatSakurai Mario was designed with global appeal in mind, were you just picking apart my example or do you have a greater point?
English

@Fminus14 Your initial framing of "fans mad at japanese company promoting japanese thing" doesn't make any sense because Mario is an equally japanese thing.
English

@BackseatSakurai I'm confused. I'm aware Mario is japanese. The target audience for mascot culture is children. So it's grown western men angry at the japanese company promoting more games for teens and up instead of children?
What point are you making here?
English

@Fminus14 I love JRPGs but Mario is just as japanese as any JRPG and this line of reasoning is really wrong and reductive. Japan has a massive mascot culture too btw, anime-styled things are not their only cultural export
